Last week I was working in one of our clients aged care facilities. One resident in particular was going to Wellington for two weeks over the holidays to be with her family. I said to her, "That sounds really great. Are you looking forward to it?" "No," she said. "I don't think I really want to go." I sat on the side of her bed and asked her why she didn't think she wanted to go. "Because I don't know Ann - I just feel 'safe' here. I don't mind going out for the day or overnight but for two weeks? I don't know. I think I must be...what's the name...'institutionalised'." Throughout my nursing career I have learnt from so many people and this lovely lady was one of them. I always tell people you never stop learning but you sometimes need to listen to learn. This year has been awesome. I have enjoyed working alongside many of my old and new staff, both registered nurses and caregivers. I think I must be the most fortunate employers around as I have such a dedicated and loyal team. Thank you all for a great year. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I know I will PS. Keep on eye out for my next blog in the new year on our ride along the Otago Rail Trail. I even managed to work out how to use the camera! |
