Another year has nearly gone and I still have not managed to do all the things I wanted to do. The years seem to be getting shorter and our lives busier. With Christmas being upon us once again I, like many others, tend to leave 'things' to the last minute, thereby creating a whirlwind of activities in the week leading up to Christmas.

Last week I was working in one of our clients aged care facilities. One resident in particular was going to Wellington for two weeks over the holidays to be with her family. I said to her, "That sounds really great. Are you looking forward to it?"

"No," she said. "I don't think I really want to go." I sat on the side of her bed and asked her why she didn't think she wanted to go.

"Because I don't know Ann - I just feel 'safe' here. I don't mind going out for the day or overnight but for two weeks? I don't know. I think I must be...what's the name...'institutionalised'." Throughout my nursing career I have learnt from so many people and this lovely lady was one of them. I always tell people you never stop learning but you sometimes need to listen to learn.

This year has been awesome. I have enjoyed working alongside many of my old and new staff, both registered nurses and caregivers. I think I must be the most fortunate employers around as I have such a dedicated and loyal team.
